CVs
This week I was one of several volunteers reviewing CVs with Lower 6th Form students at a local school. It was a really interesting and rewarding morning with each one discussing their achievements and experiences to date to help them enhance their CVs and stand out from the crowd. All 4 (young women and the eldest siblings in their families as it happens) were looking at University and most are facing the minefield I did a generation ago of sorting out exactly what it is they want to do without much knowledge of what is on offer.
Research is key at this stage and sessions with external business people can really help as echoed by their teachers. Discussion about graduate paths and the benefits of Placement years triggered some useful thoughts and ‘light bulb’ moments, particularly for those considering careers in business.
I’m a keen advocate of soft skills training and it’s easy to forget to include these skills in CVs, particularly for those at the start of their careers. It was interesting to see the parallels in the conversations today with the soft skills training I’ve run previously and looking to do again with graduates and new Managers. Definitely food for thought and it was an exciting opportunity to help those looking at the next stage of their lives.
